Seven Pointer Student-Athletes Earn Weekly WIAC Honors

MADISON - Seven UW-Stevens Point student-athletes have received the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athlete of the Week award for their respective sport. Matt Moses, Luke Nesper, David Litsheim, Claire Roberts, Brent Schwartz, Anna Nyland and Jordan Schulte were recognized for their efforrecognized ts last week.

Moses (Fond du Lac) led UW-Stevens Point to a pair of conference road wins during the week. Against UW-Eau Claire, he tallied 11 points while shooting 40% from the field during 33 minutes of playing time. Against UW-Oshkosh, Moses poured in a season-high 34 points, including 11 points in the last five minutes of the first half as the Pointers took a 38-21 halftime lead. He converted 11-of-14 field goal attempts, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, against the Titans.

Nesper (Eagle River) scored two goals to propel the Pointers to their first conference road win of the season against UW-River Falls on Jan. 23. Just 3:29 into the first period, Nesper found the back of the net to give the Pointers an early lead. In the third period with less than five minutes remaining and the score tied, Nesper beat the Falcon keeper on an even-strength strike to give the Pointers a 2-1 win. Nesper has seven goals this season with two game winners.

Litsheim (Appleton) finished first in the mile run with a time of 4:13.11 at the UW-Eau Claire Triangular. His time is the top NCAA qualifying time to date. Litsheim also ran the fastest leg (49.9 seconds) of the 4x400 meter relay team that finished first with the nation's fastest NCAA qualifying time of 3:20.2.

Roberts (Oakfield) opened the season with the fastest mile in the nation to date. She won the mile run event at the UW-Eau Claire Triangular on Jan. 23, with a NCAA qualifying time of 4:57.26.

Schwartz (Waukesha) finished first in the 200-yard Breaststroke at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational with a time of 2:09.53. He also recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard medley relay with times of 3:36.09 and 1:39.00, respectively. Schwartz added a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Competing at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational, Nyland (Eau Claire) was the top diver for the Pointers for the second straight week. She finished third in both the one-meter and three-meter events. In the one- meter dive, Nyland scored a 387.80 and in the three-meter competition, she scored a 401.20.

Schulte (Mosinee) compiled a 3-0 during the week. Against NCAA Division II opponent UW-Parkside, Schulte opened the meet with a 3-2 decision over Matt Gille. In the Border Brawl hosted by UW-Whitewater on Jan. 23, Schulte defeated George Markou of Trine University (Ind.). In his second match, Schulte won a close decision over Jack Lewis of Elmhurst College (Ill.) 5-3. Schulte improved to 15-3 on the season with the three victories.
