Pointers Compete at Dan Gable Open

OSHKOSH - The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team posted nine place-finishers on Sunday afternoon at the Seventh Annual Dan Gable Open, hosted by UW-Oshkosh. No team scores were kept at the event.

Highlights from the day for UW-Stevens Point included second place finishes by Lucas McGann (Merrimac) and Shane Sweeney (Madison) at 133 and 141 respectively. McGann finished 2nd at 133, falling to Illinois' Sam White in the finals 10-6 and Sweeney finished 2nd at 141, falling in the championship to Purdue's Matt Manuel 5-3.

Ryan Conat (New London) also finished 2nd and Craig Brandvold (Merrill) finished fourth at 174, as Conat fell to UW-Oshkosh's Sam Engelland in the finals and Brandvold wrestled his way through the loser's bracket before falling in the third place match to UW-La Crosse's Grant Goettl in the third place match.

Other place finishers on the day for the Pointers included Coulter Nyenhuis (Gladstone, MI), who finished 3rd at 165, Jordan Poirier (Bloomer) 6th place finish at 125 and Kory Kleuskens (Appleton, WI/Freedom)' (Appleton) 6th place at 149. Steve Wozniak (Neillsville) and Nick Estep (Racine) finished 4th and 5th respectively at 197, as Purdue and Wisconsin wrestlers took home the top three spots in the weight class.

The Pointers return to dual action on Wednesday, Jan. 20 when they head to UW-Parkside for a 7 p.m. match-up with the nation's sixth-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
