STEVENS POINT - The Pointers swept all three doubles matches and five out of the six singles matches on their way to an 8-1 victory over the Pioneers of Carroll University in the opening match of the 2009 season for UW-Stevens Point.
The Pointers jumped out to an early lead as
Rachel Benn (Stevens Point) and
Chelsea Allbaugh (Bettendorf, IA) posted an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Emily Riordan (Appleton) and
Kaitlyn King (Plover) teamed up for another Pointer victory, an 8-4 decision over Elissa Mckinley and Samantha Bachmann of the Pioneers.
Kaylei Sorensen (Plover, WI) and
Leah Benn (Stevens Point) picked up the final doubles victory of the day for the Pointers, an 8-3 victory over Erin Mohrbacker and Cheyanne Urso.
In singles action, newcomer
Monica Preisig (Wausau) recorded her first victory for the purple and gold, an exciting third set tiebreak victory over Mohrbacker at No. 6 singles.
The lone victory of the day for the Pioneers came at No. 3 singles at the expense of Riordan, a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 victory for Rasmussen.
Rachel Benn (Stevens Point/SPASH), Allbaugh, King and Sorensen all recorded victories in their singles matches to secure the season-opening victory for UWSP.
The Pointers (1-0) return to action on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Beloit for match-ups against Mount Mary and Beloit College.
