STEVENS POINT – A 3-0 deficit on Friday afternoon proved to be too much for the Pointer women's tennis team to overcome, as they fell to the Blugold of UW-Eau Claire 5-4 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action.
The match was moved indoors to the Multi-Activity Center (MAC) due to scattered showers in the area, but the rain did not slow the Blugold, as the visitors jumped in front to the early 3-0 lead after doubles. Even the previously undefeated tandem of
Kaylei Sorensen (Plover) and
Leah Benn (Stevens Point) could not stop the Blugold, as they suffered their first defeat at No. 3, 9-7.
The Pointers came storming back in singles action and almost overcame the early deficit, as
Rachel Benn (Stevens Point),
Chelsea Allbaugh (Bettendorf, IA),
Kaitlyn King (Plover) and Sorensen all secured victories, but it was not enough as UW-Eau Claire tallied the two victories they needed at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, securing the win.
The Pointers fall to 7-4 on the season, 0-2 in WIAC play. UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Oct. 2 when they travel to UW-River Falls for a 3:30 p.m. match-up with the Falcons.
