Pointers drop conference opener, rebound against St. Norbert

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team opened conference play on Sunday afternoon, dropping highly contested 6-3 decision to the Eagles of UW-La Crosse before rebounding with a 6-3 nonconference victory over St. Norbert College.

Against UW-La Crosse, the Pointer doubles team of Kaylei Sorensen (Plover) and Leah Benn (Stevens Point) picked up the team's only doubles victory, recording an 8-4 decision over Megan Fallon and Andrea Vivian.

In singles action, Rachel Benn (Stevens Point) and Chelsea Allbaugh (Bettendorf, IA) collected the only singles victories in the defeat, as Benn won a third set tiebreak 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7). Allbaugh was a straight set win at No. 2, defeating Kelly Stadum 6-3, 6-2.

Against St. Norbert, the Pointers won two of three doubles matches to take the early lead and Allbaugh, Emily Riordan (Appleton), Kaitlyn King (Plover) and Sorensen were all victors in singles action against the Green Knights, helping secure the seventh victory on the season for the Pointers.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action when they host UW-Eau Claire in conference action at Goerke Park on Sept. 25. Action begins at 3:30 p.m.
