Tennis suffers first setback against Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Pointer women's tennis team dropped their first match of the 2009 season on Friday evening, falling 5-4 in a closely contested match against Cornell College.

The Pointers picked up a point coming out of doubles action, asEmily Riordan (Appleton) and Kaitlyn King (Plover) earned an 8-5 victory over Cornell's Kirsten Lasley and Amanda Johnson.

At No. 1 singles, Rachel Benn (Stevens Point) earned a victory after a back-and-forth battle, coming out on top 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5). Chelsea Allbaugh (Bettendorf, IA) had a successful return to her home state, recording a tiebreak victory, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0), over Cornell's Caryl Abeyta.

Kaylei Sorensen (Plover, WI) bounced back after suffering her first doubles loss of the season and stayed perfect in singles, picking up her fifth victory of the season at No. 4, a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Alyssa Zavislak.

The Rams of Cornell proved to be too much in the end, capturing three of the six singles matches to notch their first victory of the season, handing the Pointers their first loss.

UW-Stevens Point (4-1) return to action on Saturday with matches against Knox College and Grinnell College in Iowa.
