STEVENS POINT - UW-Stevens Point head women's basketball coach
Shirley Egner announced today the addition of three more recruits to the 2009-10 roster, as
Brooke Allen (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) (Barneveld),
Liz Althoff (Darien, WI/Clinton) (Clinton) and Jess O'Connor (Belleville) will join the Pointers next season.
All three incoming student-athletes participated in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Star game June 20 in Madison. Allen, a starter on the Division 4 South team, finished the game with eight points, three assists and three steals in 22 minutes. Althoff and O'Connor, who both played for the Division III South team, combined for 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists after each recording 15 minutes.
Allen's Division 4 team was a 60-56 winner over the North squad while Althoff and O'Connor's team lost on a three-point basket at the buzzer, falling 82-79.
Allen, a 5-foot, 9-inch guard joins the Pointers in 2009 after being named an all-state player last season. She was a three-time all-conference player for the Eagles and was named team captain for her senior season. She was also a high honor roll student. On the court, Allen averaged 11.2 points per game for the Eagles, appearing in 22 games.
“Brooke is a team player, physically sound and she has the ability to be a really good outside shooter,” said Barneveld Head Coach Jim Myers.
“Brooke is fundamentally sound in all aspects of the game,” said Pointers' head coach
Shirley Egner. “She is an aggressive guard who shoots the ball well. She will be able to stretch defenses because of her range. Brooke also has the right mentality to be a great defender in our league.”
Althoff, a 5'7” guard from Clinton, was named the 2009 Rock Valley Conference Player of the Year and All-Area Player of the Year after earning all-conference accolades. Althoff served as team captain in 2008-09 and was also a member of the National Honor Society.
“Liz sees things on the court a lot of people don't see,” said Clinton's Coach Grear. “She works on things until she has it down.”
“Simply put, Liz is a competitor,” said Coach Egner. “She has a tremendous attitude along with exceptional leadership skills. She attacks the basket well and is able to create shots for her teammates.”
Rounding out the 2009-10 class for the Pointers is Jess O'Connor, a 5' 10” guard from Belleville. An all-area team honoree and all-conference player in 08-09, O'Connor served as team captain her senior season and was also on the Belleville Honor Roll.
“Jess has continued to improve herself as a basketball player throughout her career and she will continue to improve at the next level due to her tremendous work ethic, coachability and passion for the game,” said Belleville's Coach Hodgson.
“Jess is a big guard who can create her own shot plus shoot the three,” said Coach Egner. “She is solid on both ends of the floor.”
The 2008-09 Pointer women's basketball team captured their fourth WIAC regular-season championship, their first outright title since 1987. The Pointers fought their way to a 26-4 record on the season and a 14-2 record in league play. The Pointers advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament before falling to the then undefeated and No. 1 ranked Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Ill.
