Final Standings
STEVENS POINT - The UW-Stevens Point men’s track and field and cross country teams have another honor to add to a successful season in 2008-09, finishing third in the inaugural Al Carius Program of the Year standings, announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Pointers finished third in this year’s standings, behind UW-Oshkosh, who captured a share of the men’s indoor title and the men’s outdoor title, and UW-La Crosse, who finished tied with Oshkosh for the indoor title and fifth overall in the outdoor.
The Program of the Year award is awarded annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division III cross country/track and field programs. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.
The Pointers men’s cross country program earned four points in the standings by virtue of their finish at the NCAA Division III Championships in the fall. Indoor track tallied another eight points for the Pointers with an eighth place finish earlier this spring and the men’s outdoor program finished tied for 25th, garnering 26.5 points in the standings.
In order to be eligible for the award teams must qualify for the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Division III Championship in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient.
