All-Midwest Region Team
STEVENS POINT - The American Baseball Coach Association announced today four UW-Stevens Point baseball players have been honored with All-Midwest Region accolades.
Junior first baseman
Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) was a First Team honoree, while senior second baseman
Kyle Cummings (Prentice) and sophomore pitcher
Scott Williams (Baraboo) earned Second Team honors. Senior pitcher
Jeff Zielke (Watertown) was selected as a Third Team award winner.
Richter led the WIAC in hits in 2009 with 61 and finished second in both doubles (17) and home runs (9). In 47 games this season, Richter batted .333 with 183 at bats. He had a slugging percentage of .607 and had an on-base percentage of .428. His nine home runs were second on the team and his 42 RBIs led the Pointers. Richter also had 18 multiple hit games and 11 multiple RBI games.
Cummings led the team in batting average in 2009, batting an impressive .373 in 41 games. He tallied 44 hits including 11 for extra bases and added 17 RBIs. He had an on-base percentage of .500 and stole 18 bases. He also had a team-best 11-game hitting streak during the season.
Williams finished the season with a 3-2 overall record in 12 appearances. He had a 2.60 ERA in 62.1 innings pitched, allowing just 18 earned runs and 23 walks on the season while striking out 47. He also held opponents to a .165 average.
Zielke ends his career with the Pointers tied for the school’s all-time lead in saves with 20 after recording seven in 2009. He compiled a 3-2 record and a 2.34 ERA in 50.0 innings pitched. He allowed 31 hits and 13 earned runs, striking out 47 on his way to holding opposing batters to a .181 average against.
In 2009, the Pointers won a share of their eighth Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title and won their fifth straight WIAC Tournament Championships on their way to qualifying for a fifth straight NCAA Division III Tournament. The Pointers fell to eventual national champion University of St. Thomas in the regional’s third day, but not before eliminating Beloit College and the College of St. Scholastica. The team also finished 31-16, the programs eighth 30-win season in school history, all coming since 1997.
