SUPERIOR – The UW-Stevens Point softball team saw it's tournament run come to an end on Saturday, as the Pointers fell 10-5 to UW-River Falls in the second round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) softball tournament.
The seventh-seeded Pointers finish the season 21-20, their 16th straight season with 20 or more victories.
The Pointers found themselves behind big after the first two innings, as UW-River Falls plated one run in the top of the first and five more off Stevens Point starter
Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon) in the second, as they jumped out to the 6-0 lead.
The Pointers plated one run in the bottom of the second, as
Brittany Peper (Reedsburg) doubled in
Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL). In the third, the Pointers again began to chip away at the River Falls' lead, as three more Pointer runs scored, highlighted by an
Allie Dorn (Greenville) steal of home and another Peper double.
After both teams hung a run on the board in the fourth, the Falcons plated three runs in the top of the sixth, pulling in front by five, 10-5.
From there, River Falls' Rose Tusa, who relieved starter Heidi Emmer after 1.2 innings, silenced the Pointer bats as the Falcons went on for the victory.
Kastenmeier took the loss for the Pointers, pitching three innings, allowing five hits and seven runs, striking out four. Dorn came in for 4.0 innings of relief, recording three strikeouts, three runs and six hits. At the plate,
Kimberly Liegel (Madison) finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored and Nelson finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The WIAC Tournament continues on Sunday, as host UW-Superior, the eighth-seed, takes on second-seeded UW-La Crosse at Noon, with the winner receiving the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
