Pointer Basketball Coaches Earn WBCA Honors

WEST BEND - The Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced today UW-Stevens Point head basketball coaches Bob Semling and Shirley Egner have been named the organization's Division III men's and women's basketball coaches of the year.

Semling led the men's basketball team to their 25th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship and fifth tournament title in 2008-09. The Pointers amassed a 24-5 record on the season, 14-2 in WIAC play and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament before falling to then undefeated and No. 1 ranked University of St. Thomas.

The Pointers ranked No. 4 in the final D3hoops.com poll, the third straight season the finished ranked in the national poll.

Egner led the women's basketball team to their fourth WIAC regular-season championship, their first outright title since 1987. The Pointers fought their way to a 26-4 record on the season and a 14-2 record in league play. The Pointers advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament before falling to the then undefeated and No. 1 ranked Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Ill.

The Pointers finished the season ranked No. 7 by D3hoops.com.

Both coaches were named WIAC Coaches of the Year earlier this year.
