Richter Leads List of Pointer All-Conference Selections

MADISON - For the fifth consecutive year, a UW-Stevens Point baseball player has earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) major award. This year, junior first baseman/outfield Jeremy Richter (Rosholt) took home the award, highlighting a class of eight Pointers who were named all-conference by the league office Wednesday afternoon.

Richter, a transfer to UW-Stevens Point from Madison Area Technical College, finished tied for the league lead in hits (58), finished third in RBIs (42), second in doubles (16), tied for second in home runs (9), behind only teammate Jared Surman (Kimberly), and led the league in total bases with 107. In 43 games, he batted .354, fourth-best in the WIAC, and had a league-best .652 slugging percentage.

Joining Richter on the first team was senior second baseman Kyle Cummings (Prentice), sophomore shortstop Eric Fritz (Custer, SPASH) and sophomore right-hander Scott Williams (Baraboo).

Cummings enters the NCAA Division III Regional at Oshkosh on an 11-game hitting streak and leads the Pointers with a .408 average. In 37 games this season, he has registered 40 hits including eight doubles and 15 RBIs. Cummings has also stolen a team-high 17 bases and registered a team-best 13 sacrifice hits.

Fritz has started all 43 games this season for the Pointers at shortstop, 41 in the leadoff spot. He is hitting .291 on the season with 48 hits and 38 runs scored and is also a perfect 15-15 in stolen bases. Williams posted a 3-2 record in 11 appearances this season for the Pointers. His 3.04 ERA was fourth best on the team and his 53.1 innings was the team's second-most. He allowed just 33 hits and 25 runs on the season, 18 earned and struck out 41 batters.

Three Pointers earned honorable mention accolades as senior right-hander Kyle Barry (Twin Lakes, Wilmot), freshman centerfielder Cody Koback (Plover, SPASH) and senior reliever Jeff Zielke (Watertown) received honors from the league's coaches.

Barry posted a 3.90 era and had a team-high six wins on the mound this season with the Pointers. He has made 12 appearances, 11 starts, and pitched a team-high 67 innings. He has also recorded a team-best 66 strikeouts on the year. Koback is batting .299 this season, good for third on the team. He has belted five home runs this season and added 22 RBIs. Zielke has made a team-high 18 appearances on the mound, all in relief this season and boasts a 2.51 ERA. His seven saves this season gives him 20 for his career, tying the all-time school record of 20. In 43.0 innings, he has allowed just 12 earned runs and struck out 44 batters.

Sophomore catcher Jordan Rennicke (Mequon, Homestead) was named to the league's All-Sportsmanship team. Rennicke is batting .290 in 34 games this season. He has logged 27 hits and drove in 20 runs.

UW-Platteville's Joe Lang was named the league's Pitcher of the Year, Ross Benitz of UW-La Crosse received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete award and UW-Whitewater's John Vodenlich was named Coach of the Year.
