Game One Box
Game Two Box

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point softball team got its first taste of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action on Wednesday afternoon, dropping both games of the doubleheader with the 2008 NCAA Division III runner-up and 14th-ranked Warhawks of UW-Whitewater.

The Pointers dropped the opener 9-0 in a five inning affair before falling in the nightcap 11-4.

The visiting Warhawks (18-2, 8-0 WIAC) scored their nine runs in the first three innings, chasing Pointer starter Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon) from the game after just 2.2 innings of work. Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL) closed out the game, throwing 2.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out three.

Samantha Bizeau (Gladstone, MI) collected two of the Pointers three hits off Whitewater starter Jessica Stang, going 2-for-2.

In game two, Whitewater again did their damage in the early innings, hanging four runs on the board in the top of the first and added another in the second for a 5-0 lead.

The Pointers plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth after an Allie Dorn (Greenville) double to right center field plated Brittany Zelenka (Marathon) and Nelson, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

Whitewater answered with one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to push the lead back to five, pulling ahead 7-2.

The Pointers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap, but four runs in the top of the seventh by the Warhawks put the game away, as they cruised to the 11-4 victory.

Dorn took the loss for the Pointers, going seven innings, allowing eight earned runs and recording two strikeouts. Dorn was also 2-for-3 from the plate in game two with a double and three RBI.

UW-Stevens Point (13-7, 0-2 WIAC) returns to action on Friday, April 10 with a doubleheader against UW-La Crosse. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. in La Crosse.
