MENOMONIE, Wis. - In search of one more win to secure the team's 16th straight 20-plus win season, the UW-Stevens Point softball team split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 20-18 overall. The split also moves the Pointers to 5-11 in conference play.
After a quiet first three innings to game one, the Pointers broke the game open in the top of the fourth, capped by a
Samantha Bizeau (Gladstone, MI) grand slam to give the Pointers the 7-0 lead.
The Pointers added another run in the top of the seventh to pull in front 8-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Stout's Kat Nelson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to try and spark a comeback, but senior
Allie Dorn (Greenville) shut the door, picking up her fifth win of the season.
Dorn struck out four batters in the complete-game victory, allowing just six hits and one walk.
At the plate, Bizeau was the only Pointer to register multiple hits, finishing game one 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
Game to displayed a bit more offense early on, as the Pointers opened the game with two runs in the top of the first, only to see the Blue Devils answer in their half of the opening frame, knotting the game at 2-2.
Stout took a one-run advantage in the bottom of the second but the Pointers again tied the score in the third, thanks to a
Brittany Zelenka (Marathon) single.
The Blue Devils again took the lead in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth off Pointer reliever
Jessica Berger (Bonduel). The Pointer rally in the top of the seventh fell just short, as Jenna Johnson came in to secure the save for the Blue Devils.
Berger took the loss, her second of the season, going four innings in relief, striking out four.
The Pointers return to action at the WIAC Tournament on May 1-3 in Superior. The tournament bracket will be released later this week.
