Game Two Box

STEVENS POINT – Brittany Zelenka's (Marathon) two out two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning broke a 1-1 tie and gave the UW-Stevens Point softball team a 3-1 non-conference victory in game one of a nonconference tilt on Thursday afternoon with the Green Knights of St. Norbert. The Pointers went on to drop game two 2-1.

Scoreless through three innings in game one, the Pointers plated a run in the top of the fourth, as Lauren Watkins (Baraboo) scored on a Kelly Arndt (Ashwaubenon) groundout.

After tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the game remained scoreless until Zelenka's blast put the Pointers in front 3-1, and Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon) retired the Green Knights in order, picking up her 14th win of the season, her third in two days.

Kastenmeier pitched a full seven innings, striking out five while scattering eight hits. At the plate, Zelenka and Kimberly Liegel (Madison) each collected two hits on the day while Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL) was the only other Pointer to collect a hit off St. Norbert pitching.

In game two, the host Green Knights took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but UW-Stevens Point came back with a run of their own in the top of the second when Watkins scored on an Allie Dorn (Greenville) single. St. Norbert scored again in the bottom of the second, retaking the lead 2-1.

St. Norbert pitcher Kayla Krueger scattered four Pointer hits the rest of the way, picking up her seventh victory of the season, earning the split.

Jessica Berger (Bonduel) suffered the loss for the Pointers, her first of the season, throwing six innings of three hit ball, striking out two in the loss.

The Pointers (19-15) return to action on April 25 with a doubleheader against the Falcons of UW-River Falls beginning at 2 p.m.
