Pointers Keep Rolling; Sweep Platteville

PLATTEVILLE - The UW-Stevens Point softball team picked up two more conference victories on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Pioneers of UW-Platteville 9-0 and 8-5 to improve to 4-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), 18-14 overall.

The Pointers built and early 4-0 lead in game one and added two more runs in the second to take the 6-0 lead.

The game stayed in favor of the Pointers and in top of the seventh, the Pointers plated three more runs to go in front 9-0 and stay in front for the nine-run victory.

Kayla Kastenmeier earned her 12th win of the season in game one, going the full seven innings, allowing just three hits, striking out eight in the victory.

At the plate, Sarah Butts (Greenfield) finished the game 4-for-4 with two runs scored while Melissa Wenig (Oshkosh) finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs.

In game two, the Pioneers jumped out to the 3-1 lead after one. The Pointers came back, scoring in the third and fourth innings to tie the game a 3-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers plated three runs to retake the lead 6-3 and put themselves in position for their first conference victory in 14 tries.

But in the Pointers final frame, Jessica Berger (Bonduel) and Lauren Watkins (Baraboo) each singled in two runs and an Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL) sacrifice fly scored Wenig to give the Pointers the lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

From there, Kastenmeier closed the door, picking up the second win of the day, keeping the host Pioneers winless in league play.

Kastenmeier threw four innings in relief of starter Allie Dorn (Greenville), allowing three runs on five hits, striking out six in her 13th win of the season. Dorn threw the game's first three innings, allowing three runs on three hits.

At the plate, Butts was 3-for-4 with a run scored while Kimberly Liegel (Madison), Brittany Zelenka (Marathon) and Watkins each finished the day with two hits.

The Pointers return to action tomorrow, April 23 in nonconference action against the Green Knights of St. Norbert in De Pere. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
