Zimmermann Wins Major League Debut

After waiting years to make it to the big leagues, a two hours and 10 minute rain delay to the start of Monday's Washington Nationals game had to feel like an eternity for former UW-Stevens Point standout Jordan Zimmermann.

After having his original debut pushed back a day because of weather, the hard-throwing right hander from Auburndale waited through a rain delay on Monday before getting a chance to throw a pitch in the MLB.

And when given the chance, he capitalized.

Jordan threw six innings of six hit baseball, striking out three batters. While he did allow a two-run home run to Atlanta's Matt Diaz, Zimmerman's offense picked up the slack, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth, putting Jordan in line for the win.

“Jordan's debut last night was a special moment for him and for Pointer Baseball,” said UW-Stevens Point head coach Pat Bloom. “He showed last night that he has the makeup and the repertoire to be successful at the highest level. He demonstrated command of all four pitches, had good velocity on his fastball (up to 96 mph), and worked out of some tough situations that allowed his team to be in a position to win in the late innings.

“We are extremely proud of Jordan and, on behalf of our Pointer family, we want to congratulate him on his debut and on his first Major League victory.”
