Game Two Box

STEVENS POINT - The UW-Stevens Point softball team earned its first pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) wins on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior 5-3 in game one before notching an 11-10 come-from-behind victory in game two.

The wins improve the Pointers to 16-14 overall, 2-8 in the WIAC while Superior falls to 10-14 overall, 1-9 in WIAC play.

In game one, the Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the first, as Lauren Watkins (Baraboo) singled home Kimberly Liegel (Madison), giving the Pointers an early advantage.

The Pointers tacked on four more runs in the fourth, as Melissa Wenig (Oshkosh) homered to left center plating two runs. Two batters later, Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL) hit a home run of her own, her fourth of the season, to give the Pointers a 4-1 advantage. Sarah Butts (Greenfield) then reached on an error by the first basemen and later stole home, completing the four run inning and giving the Pointers the 5-0 lead.

Superior added two runs in the fifth and one in the top of the seventh but the Pointers held on for the 5-3 victory.

Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon) earned the victory, throwing a complete game four hitter, allowing just two earned runs while striking out four. Liegel was 3-4 at the plate while Wenig finished game one with two RBIs.

In game two, the Pointers fell behind 4-1 after three innings and after a five run fifth inning by the Yellowjackets, the Pointers were a half inning away from suffering a run-shortened defeat.

But the Pointers came charging back, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the fifth, collecting six hits and capitalized on three Yellowjacket errors to take a 10-9 lead.

Superior tied the game in their half of the sixth but Wenig scored on a Nelson sacrifice fly, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Allie Dorn (Greenville) picked up the win, throwing the game's final two innings, allowing two hits and struck out one. Kastenmeier opened the game for the Pointers, allowing five hits, four runs and recorded one strikeout.

The Pointers return to action on April 22 when they travel to UW-Platteville for a match-up with the Pioneers. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
