Game Two Box

STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-4 and 11-3 to the 14th-ranked Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play.

The Pointers struck first in game one, as Sarah Butts (Greenfield) led off the game with a triple and later scored on a Kimberly Liegel (Madison) single.

The Blugolds answered back in their half of the second, tying the game at one. In the Pointer half of the second, two more runs scored, as Melissa Wenig (Oshkosh) on an Allie Dorn (Greenville) sacrifice fly and Jessica Berger (Bonduel) later scored on an illegal pitch.

In the visitor half of the third, the Blugolds plated five runs and added another in the fourth to jump in front 7-3.

The Pointers added a run in the bottom of the sixth and had the game-tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but UW-Eau Claire pitcher Jenny Ross recorded the final strikeout, picking up the save.

Dorn suffered the loss in game one, allowing five runs on six hits, striking out two in 5.1 innings of work. Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon) pitched 1.2 innings of relief, allowing four hits and struck out one.

In game two, the Blugolds posted three runs in the opening inning, but the Pointers added two in their half of the inning to cut the early deficit to just one, 3-2.

The Blugolds scored another run in the third and added another five run inning in the fourth, jumping in front 9-2. The Pointers added one run in the bottom of the fifth, but two runs in the top of the sixth by UW-Eau Claire was too much to overcome, as the Blugolds held on for the run-shortened victory in six innings.

Elyse Nelson (Batavia, IL) took the loss in game one, allowing five runs, four earned in 3.2 innings of work, striking out one. Dorn pitched 2.0 innings of relief, allowing three hits and struck out one.

The Pointers are scheduled to return to action on Sunday, April 19 when they host the UW-Superior Yellowjackets at McCarty Memorial Field in the final home game of 2009. Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
