Zelenka's Two Home Runs End Pointers Skid

Game Two Box Score

STEVENS POINT - New beginning.  Those were the first words UW-Stevens Point head coach Tom Henke's uttered when his team arrived at McCarty Memorial Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Pointers, who had dropped their last six games and were in danger of falling to .500, took advantage of the chance for a fresh start. It just took a game for it to happen.

The Pointers opened the first game of the nonconference doubleheader with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Eagles of Edgewood College, but answered back with a 13-2 run-shortened victory in game two.

In game one the Eagles jumped ahead 2-0 on Kayla Kastenmeier (Ashwaubenon) and the Pointers and added one run in both the third and sixth innings to record their first victory in the all-time series with the Pointers 4-2.

Kastenmeier took the loss, going seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out five. Eagle's pitcher Jenna Ryan tallied the win, pitching a complete game three-hitter, striking out four.

In game two, the Pointer bats, that had been cold since the weather turned warm, came alive. Brittany Zelenka (Marathon) went 2-2 with two home runs including a grand slam and tallied six RBIs while Jessica Berger (Bonduel) and Melissa Wenig (Oshkosh) each went deep as the Pointers recorded 14 hits.

Three runs in the first, four in the second and five in the third was all that senior Allie Dorn (Greenville) needed, as she went the distance, allowing just two runs on four hits, striking out two in the five inning victory, her third of the season.

The Pointers will need to carry their hot hitting into the weekend when they host defending National Champion UW-Eau Claire on Senior Day at McCarty Field. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
