\STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis opened the spring portion of their 2008-09 season on Saturday, recording wins over UW-River Falls and Edgewood College. The Pointers recorded a 7-2 win over Edgewood in the day's first match before defeating River Falls 6-3.

In the day's opening match against Edgewood, the Pointers jumped out to the early 2-1 lead as the tandem of
Rachel Benn (Stevens Point) and
Chelsea Allbaugh (Bettendorf, IA) picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. The team of
Emily Riordan (Appleton) and
Kaitlyn King (Plover) also picked up a victory at No. 2 doubles by another 8-1 score.
In singles, the Pointers fell one match short of a clean sweep, as Benn, Riordan,
Kaylei Sorensen (Plover), King and
Lauren Kluz (Sheboygan Falls) all picked up victories for the Pointers, all in straight sets.
Against River Falls, the Pointers team of Sorensen and
Emily Oxton (Manitowoc) won the only doubles match, a 9-8 (7-3) decision, as the Pointers entered singles play with a 2-1 deficit to overcome.
In singles action, the Pointers swept matches one through five as Benn, Allbaugh, Riordan, Sorensen and King all tallied victories in some tightly contested matches. Benn and Riordan won in straight sets but Allbaugh, Sorensen and King were forced into a tiebreaker action to record victories.
The Pointers return to play this spring on April 19 when they travel Winona, Minn. for matches against St. Mary's and Winona St.
