Shirley Egner recently announced the results of the team's year-end awards voting.
Sophomore forward
Britta Petersen (Luck) claimed the team's Offensive Player of the Year award. A First Team All-WIAC recipient in 2009, Petersen led the team in scoring, pouring in 14.2 points per game this season for the Pointers, who advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament. She shot 55.0 percent from the floor on the season, ranking 20th in all of Division III in field goal percentage. She finished second on the team in total rebounds (164) and offensive rebounds (51).
Senior guard
Katie Webber (Reedsburg) took home Defensive Player of the Year honors. A senior tri-captain, Webber was a 2009 First Team All-WIAC honoree and was named to the WIAC's All-Defensive Team this season, the second consecutive year she has garnered the award. Webber started all 30 games for the Pointers this season, averaging 26.3 minutes per contest. She averaged 8.1 points and 2.7 rebound per game and collected a team high 64 steals (2.13 per game). She also posted a 1.97 assist/turnover ratio (65-33) on the season as a member of the back-to-back WIAC Tournament Champions.
Senior forward
Ashley Baker (Vesper, Pittsville) took home the team's Most Improved Player of the Year award. Baker started all 30 games for the Pointers in her final season, averaging 20.7 minutes per game. She scored at a 7.0 points per game clip while collecting 3.5 rebounds per game. Her scoring and rebounding averages improved considerably over the 2007-08 season in which she made 27 appearances off the bench, scoring 1.7 points and collected 1.4 rebounds.
Taking home the most coveted award of the 2008-09 season was
Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point), who received the Pointer Award. The annual Pointer award is given to the women's basketball player who, in the opinion of their peers, best embodies the four qualifying standards; The player acts selflessly for the good of the team, the player enhances team unity, the player works hard to gain the respect of teammates and staff members and the player displays enthusiasm and passion for the game of basketball.
Starting in all 30 games this season, the senior tri-captain was named to the Honorable Mention All-WIAC team and was also named to the All-Sportsmanship Team. Sporle finished as the team's leading rebounder, pulling in 177 rebounds in 2008-09, 5.9 per game and led the team in rebounding 11 games. She also finished second on the team in scoring, adding 10.7 points per game and was the team's leading scorer in seven contests including the Sweet 16 contest at Illinois Wesleyan.
