MADISON - Five members of the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team have earned All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) accolades and head coach
Bob Semling has been selected as Coach of the Year.
Senior forwards
Bryan Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids/Lincoln) and
Pete Rortvedt (Minocqua/Lakeland) join senior guard
Khalifa El-Amin (Milwaukee/Rufus King) and sophomore guard
Matt Moses (Fond du Lac/St. Mary Springs) on the First Team while senior center
Jerome Wotachek (Mishicot/Mishicot) was selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Beamish (Wisconsin Rapids, Lincoln), a senior co-captain, makes his second career appearance on the All-WIAC First Team. He finished the season ranked eighth in the conference in field goal percentage, connecting on 55.4 percent of his shots. He amassed 278 points, fourth most on this season's Pointers squad. His 108 assists were second on the team and his 3.6 rebounds per game average was good for fourth.
Rortvedt (Minocqua, Lakeland) garnered his fourth All-WIAC honor, his third First-Team, on his way to finishing ninth on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,453 points. Pete also set a new school record for three-pointers in a career, posting 302 career makes from beyond the arc. This season he finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.9 points per game and was the team's leading rebounder, pulling in 5.3 boards per game.
El-Amin (Milwaukee, Rufus King), the Pointers other senior co-captain, makes his first appearance on the All-WIAC First Team. He finished the season with an 11.2 points per game scoring average. El-Amin also led the team with 114 assists and a team-best 2.38-to-1 assist-turnover ratio. He also logged a team-high 966 minutes, an average of 33.3 per game.
Moses (Fond du Lac, St. Mary Springs) also makes his first appearance on the All-WIAC team. The junior guard led the Pointers in scoring this season, averaging 13.2 points per game and finished second on the team in rebounding, collecting 4.7 per game. His 32 second half points against UW-Stout on Jan. 14 set a school record for points in a half and he connected on a school record 35 consecutive free-throw attempts during the season, also a school record.
Wotachek (Mishicot) makes his first appearance on an All-WIAC team after being chosen for the All-Sportsmanship Team. He appeared in all 29 games in his final season for the Pointers, averaging 11.3 minutes per contest. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. He also finished tied for second on the team with 14 blocks.
Coach Semling earned his second Coach of the Year award after leading the team to a 24-5 finish in the 2008-09 campaign and the programs 25th regular season WIAC title and the fifth tournament championship in the last nine seasons. In his four seasons at the helm of the Pointers, Semling has compiled a 90-25 record and boasts a 52-12 record in conference play.
