MADISON - Four UW-Stevens Point women's basketball players have received postseason honors from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Head Coach Shirley Egner was also selected as Coach of the Year, the third time she has won the award in her 20 years at UWSP.

Sophomore forward Britta Petersen (Luck), senior guard Janell Van Gomple (DeForest) and senior guard Katie Webber (Reedsburg) all received a spot on this year's First Team. Senior forward Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point) was selected to the Honorable Mention and All-Sportsmanship Teams while Webber was selected to the All-Defensive Team.

Petersen leads the way for the Pointers, scoring 14.4 points per game and ranks sixth in the WIAC in scoring average. Petersen has started 28 of 29 games this season and ranks No. 16 in NCAA Division III in field-goal percentage, shooting 55.5 percent from the floor. She also ranks second on the team in rebounding, averaging 5.6 rebounds per game, and has a team-high 40 blocks this season.

Van Gomple has started all 29 games for the Pointers this season, averaging just over 28 minutes per game. She is currently third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.7 points per game. Van Gomple leads the team in assists (89) and three-point field goals made (43).

Webber makes her second consecutive appearance on the league's All-Defensive Team and also earned First Team All-WIAC honors this season. Her 8.1 points per game this season ranks her fourth on the team and her team-best 63 steals ranks her fourth in the WIAC, averaging 2.22 per game.

Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point/Mineral Point) makes her first appearance on the All-WIAC team after being selected for both the Honorable Mention and All-Sportsmanship Teams. Sporle's 10.5 points per game this season ranks second on the team and her 6.0 rebounds per game leads UWSP.

Egner was named WIAC Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the third time in her years at UWSP. Egner led the Pointers to their eighth 20-win season in the last nine seasons. Earlier this season Egner tallied her 350th career win with the Pointers as the team set a new school record for consecutive victories at 14.

The fourth-ranked Pointers (26-3) advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2009 NCAA Division III Tournament this past weekend and will face the top-ranked Titans of Illinois Wesleyan in sectional action on Friday, March 13 in Bloomington, Ill. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
