Three teams converge on Stevens Point this weekend in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament March 6-7. The Pointer women play host to Concordia University (Wis.), Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) and Maryville (Mo.) in games beginning Friday afternoon in Berg Gymnasium.

First up on Friday, the Falcons of Concordia University (Wis.) square off against the Cobbers of Concordia-Moorhead. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip-off.

The Falcons (22-5) secured the No. 2 seed in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) tournament and defeated the No. 1 seed Wisconsin Lutheran in the league's championship game, taking the Warriors to overtime before coming out on top, winning by four.

The Falcons are led by Krista Mayyou, who in just under 27 minutes per game this season averaged 16.7 points per game. She also finished third on the team in rebounding, pulling down 6.2 boards per game. The leading rebounder roll was reserved for Pearl Wallace, who corralled 6.7 boards per game for the Falcons.

Currently 19-8 overall, Concordia-Moorhead makes their 16th appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament after receiving an at-large or “Pool C” bid to the tournament. The Cobbers, the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (MIAC) No. 2 seed, suffered a 57-48 defeat to No. 1 seed Saint Benedict in their league's title game.

The Cobbers are led offensively by senior Jenna Freundenberg who averages 16.7 points a game. Lindsey Schultz serves as the Moorhead's leading rebounder, pulling down 166 boards so far this season, an average of 6.1 per game.

In the night cap, the Pointers will face Maryville in a 7 p.m. start in Berg Gym.

The Pointers make their second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament and their sixth appearance overall. UWSP earned a spot in the tournament after winning the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Conference (WIAC) Postseason Tournament title, finishing the as the regular-season champions and earning the tournament's No. 1 seed.

The Pointers are led by sophomore Britta Petersen (Luck). Petersen averaged 14.0 points per game for the Pointers and has scored a team-high 364 points on the year. Senior Jessi Sporle (Mineral Point) is the other Pointer scoring in double figures, adding 10.3 points per game and fills in as the team's leading rebounder, pulling down 6.1 boards per contest.

The Saints are currently 22-5 and have been riding high on a 14-game winning streak since the end of December. This marks the fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament for Maryville, who captured their fourth straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament title in as many years last weekend.

Senior Sara Wemlinger heads up the Saints with 11.4 points per game and senior Allie Wilhelm adds an average of 11.2 points per game. Wilhelm also serves as the team's leading rebounder, snaring 5.9 rebounds per contest.
