Men Eighth, Women 27th at Swimming Championships

MINNEAPOLIS – The UW-Stevens Point swimming and diving team's completed action at the 2009 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday, with the men's team finishing in eighth place with 143 points while the women's team finished in 27th with 25 points.

The eighth place finish by the Pointers marked the seventh year in a row UWSP has finished in the top-20.

Kenyon College won its 30th straight NCAA Division III men's title and 23rd consecutive women's title.

Highlights from the fourth day of the championships included Chase Gross (Edina, MN), who finished 10th in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 44.66. Ian Girdley (Verona) finished in seventh place in the men's 200-yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:51.06.

The men's and women's 400-yard freestyle relay teams also competed in the finals on day four. The women's team of Jessica Nordstrom (Hibbing, Minn.), Lindsay Lukes (Austin, Minn.), Abby Strobel (Neenah) and Beth Ann Abraham (Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished 16th with a time of 3:34.58. The men's team of Steve Lynam (Fitchburg), Sam Davy (Stevens Point), Rob Donisch (Wheaton, Ill.) and Gross finished eighth with a time of 3:02.40.
