Pointers Finish Second at WIAC Wrestling Championships

OSHKOSH – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team came up just short in their bid to halt the 11-time defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) champion UW-La Crosse on Sunday at the 2009 WIAC Wrestling Championships. The Pointers finished with 144 team points, two points behind the Eagles in the final team standings.

UW-Whitewater finished in third place with 126 points while UW-Oshkosh finished fourth, UW-Eau Claire fifth, UW-Platteville sixth and Lawrence University seventh.

Jake Wozniak (Stanley, Stanley-Boyd) wrestled his way to a championship at 165 pounds, pinning UW-Whitewater's Pat Nagel in 4:47 in the championship match. Jered Kern (Mosinee) also won an individual championship for the Pointers, wrestling his way past UW-La Crosse's Bebeto Yewah 10-7 at 133 pounds.

Elsewhere, Brett Oswald (Antio) finished second at 285-pounds, Ben Engelland (Neenah) finished second at 184-pounds and Chase DeCleene (Ashwaubenon) finished second at 141.

Other Pointers in action included Joe Mileski (Gladstone, Mich,), who finished third at 125-pounds, Kris Magruder (Racine, Case) who finished third at 149-pounds, Andrew Dilworth (Greendale) who finished third at 157-pounds, Dennis Reckelberg (Luxemburg, Luxemburg-Casco) who finished third at 174-pounds and Jeremy Fulk (Anchorage, AK, West Valley) who finished fifth at 197-pounds.

Wozniak was also voted the John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet for his efforts in securing the 165-pound championship and was also named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Wozniak and Kern earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships on March 6-7 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to compete for a national title. Joining them will be Chase DeCleene (Ashwaubenon/Ashwaubenon) and Ben Engelland (Neenah/Neenah), who were selected as at-large participants.
