Women Capture Wheaton Invite Title, Men Second

WHEATON, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point women's swimming team tallied 963 points to finish first out of seven teams on the weekend while the men's team finished second to Hope College in a six team men's field at the Wheaton Invitational Swim Meet this weekend.

In action on Friday, the women's 200 freestyle team of Lisa Clemens (Wisconsin Dells), Kelly Kading (De Pere), Andrea Wagner (Owatonna) and Jessica Nordstrom (Hibbing, MN) finished with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:35.59, over two seconds ahead of host Wheaton's second place relay team.  Their time also set a meet and pool record.

The women's 400 medley relay team also took home an event title as Diandra Nero (Green Bay), Kelly Kading, Lisa Clemens (Wisconsin Dells) and Lindsay Lukes (Austin, MN) finished first with a time of 4:00.26.

Elsewhere, Beth Ann Abraham (Eden Prairie) finished with a time of 2:12.72 in the 200 IM to finish first. Diandra Nero finished second in the championship final with a time of 2:09.69 in the 200 backstroke and Andrea Wagner finished second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.41.

On the men's side Friday, the 200 freestyle relay team of Matthew Olp (Oregon), Ryan Golz (Inver Grove Heights, MN), Eric Emerson (River Falls) and Sam Davy (Stevens Point) finished second with a time of 1:24.30. Zach Desy (Escanaba, MI) finished first in the men's 200 IM with an NCAA “B” time of 1:54.88, Ian Girdley (Verona) finished with a time of 1:54.68 in the 200 backstroke, another “B” cut time and Sam Davy finished second with a time of 46.51, just short of the “B” cut time in the 100 freestyle.

On Saturday, the Pointer women continued to add up the points on their way to the first place finish, as the 200 medley relay team of Diandra Nero, Kelly Kading, Katie Buhr (Faribault, MN) and Jes Nordstrom finished first with a time of 1:49.92.

Individually, Beth Ann Abraham finished second in the women's 400 IM, posting a time of 4:40.94, Katie Buhr finished second with a time of 59.69 after posting an event best time of 59.15 in the preliminaries of the 100 butterfly and Jes Nordstrom posted a Division III “B” cut time of 23.97 in the 50 freestyle to take home the event championship.

For the Pointer men, the 200 medley relay team of Matt Olp, Ben Schreiber (Albert Lea, MN), Ryan Farmer (Naperville, IL) and Sam Davy finished first with a time of 1:34.81 and the men's 400 freestyle relay team of Davy, Olp, Eric Emerson (River Falls) and Joey Clapp (Fairbault, MN) finished second with a time of 3:08.00.

Individually, Ryan Farmer posted another NCAA “B” cut time for the Pointers, finishing with a time of 50.56 in the championship final of the 100 butterfly and Brent Schwartz posted a “B” cut time of 2:07.02 in the men's 200 breaststroke.

The Pointers will now be off until the New Year when they travel to UW-Whitewater for a Tri-dual against the Warhawks and UW-Oshkosh Titans Jan. 16.
