STEVENS POINT - After winning back-to-back Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular season and tournament championships, the Pointers will head south for their third straight NCAA Division III Tournament appearance, as UW-Stevens Point will travel to Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. for the first and second rounds of the 2009 tournament.
Host Augustana will face Albion (9-4-6) in the first round Saturday, November 14, at 5:00 p.m. with the Pointers (15-3-1) taking on St. Thomas (13-5-1) in the second opening round match at 7:30 p.m. The winners will meet on Sunday, November 15, at 6:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for seniors, students and military personnel, and $2.00 for children ages 3-12.
The Pointers will face a familiar foe in the first round. The Pointers and St. Thomas (13-5-1) met in action earlier this season, with St. Thomas coming out on top 1-0. In St. Paul, the then 22nd ranked Pointers fell prey to the Tommies in a closely contested battle. After both teams battled to a scoreless halftime score, the Tommies' Regina Horak struck off a deflected ball by Pointers keeper
Liz Hunter (Stevens Point/SPASH), scoring the game's only score.
The Pointers are 13-13-1 all-time in the NCAA Division III tournament and posted a 2-1 record last season, defeating Edgewood College and Loras College before falling to Eastern University in the Sweet 16.
