Six Pointers Named All-WIAC, Miech Named Coach of the Year

MADISON – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team has been rewarded for their outstanding season. The Pointers (15-3-1, 8-0-0 WIAC) had six players earn All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) honors after going undefeated in WIAC play for the 11th time in team history.

Midfielder Mary Jean Cornelius (West Bend) (four assists), goalkeeper Liz Hunter (Stevens Point) (68 saves, 11 shutouts), defender Kelly Lloyd (Fond du Lac), forward Kirsti Nickels (Appleton) (15 goals, nine assists), and forward Jackie Spees (Wisconsin Rapids) (10 goals, eight assists) earned 2009 All-WIAC First Team honors.

Defender Stephanie Wolf (Kenosha) rounds up the awards by earning All-WIAC Sportsmanship Team honors.

Head coach Sheila Miech was also awarded the league's Coach of the Year award by her peers.  Coach Miech led the Pointers to their 11th straight undefeated season in conference play, reloading a team that lost 10 seniors from the 2008 roster, leading last season's team to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.  This season, the Miech led the Pointers to their 22nd consecutive winning season and improved her overall record to 335-106-29.

The Pointers led all WIAC teams with six players honored. UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh had four women honored and UW-Eau Claire had three honorees.

After securing their second straight WIAC Tournament title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Pointers will travel to Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. on Friday, Nov. 13 for an NCAA Tournament first round match-up with the Tommies of St. Thomas University.  The Pointers and Tommies met earlier this season, with St. Thomas earning the 1-0 non-conference victory in St. Paul.
