BLAINE, MINN – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team improved to 3-1 after defeating Bethel University by a score of 4-2 at the Bethel Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Pointers were led on offense by
Jessica Edward (Sherrard, IL/Shattuck St. Mary's (MN)) and
Michelle Lunneborg (Richfield, MN/Richfield), who scored two goals apiece. Edward put UW-Stevens Point on the board first with a first period goal at the 9:41 mark.
Erin Marvin (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) and
Erika Greenen (Naperville, IL/Central) recorded assists on the play.
Bethel University capitalized on a couple early Pointer penalties by adding two power play goals in a span of 10 minutes between the first and second periods.
Lunneborg scored her first goal of the evening with 5:04 left in the second period on a pass from
Sarah Phillips (Kelowna, B.C./St. George's School (RI)) and
Sarah Dusold (Shoreview, MN/Irondale). The goal tied the game at 2-2 heading into the third period.
Lunneborg and Edward each added their second goals of the game in the third period, giving UW-Stevens Point the 4-2 lead and victory. Lunneborg's goal was assisted by
Tracy Butler (Marshfield/Marshfield).
Pointer goalie
Cassi Carpenter (Forest Lake, MN/Centennial) earned the victory for UW-Stevens Point, recording 21 saves. Jess Newstrom of Bethel University recorded 34 saves in the loss.
The Pointers return to action tomorrow for their first home game of the season at Ice Hawks Arena in Stevens Point. Puck drops at 2:30 p.m. against Concordia-Moorhead University.
