MILWAUKEE – The UW-Stevens Point women’s basketball held a 45-44 lead with 8:43 left, but the Panthers of UW-Milwaukee closed out the game on a 22-12 run to hand the Pointers a 66-57 exhibition loss on Thursday evening at the Klotsche Center.
With the score tied at 14-14 midway through the first half, the Panthers opened up an 11 point lead, 29-18, with five minutes remaining in the half. The Pointers chipped away at the Panther lead and a
Liz Althoff (Darien) three-pointer with :39 seconds remaining cut the deficit to five, 36-31, heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Pointers continued to chip away at the Panther lead and took their only lead of the second half, 45-44, thanks to two
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin) free throws.
The rest of the way, the Panthers took control, thanks to an 18-8 edge in points in the paint in the second half, as they outlasted the Pointers and picked up the victory.
Andrea Flease (New London) led the way for the Pointers with 13 points while
Cassie Bandow (Plover) added 11.
Britta Petersen (Luck) added a team-high 11 rebounds to her eight point effort in the loss.
UW-Milwaukee’s Ashley Imperiale led all scorers with 19.
The Pointers kickoff the 2009-10 season for real on Nov. 17 when they travel to La Crosse for a 5:30 p.m. match-up with the V-Hawks of Viterbo University.
