STEVENS POINT - Cassie Bandow's (Plover) jumper with eight seconds remaining gave UW-Stevens Point the lead and the victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Pointers defeated the Cobbers of Concordia-Moorhead 69-67 in the championship game of the 2009 Pointer Tip-Off Tournament.

The Cobbers (1-1) held the lead for much of the game's opening half, but could not pull away, only building a six point lead at the 11:48 mark, 15-12. The Pointers battled back to take their first lead since the game's opening minute when Britta Petersen (Luck) put the Pointers in front 25-23 with 5:22 remaining.

Both teams traded the lead down the stretch before UW-Stevens Point's Brook Allen connected on a three-pointer with 13 seconds left in the half to give UW-Stevens Point the one point edge at the break, 35-34.

Concordia held the lead for much of the second half, but again could not build a lead larger than seven, 61-54 with 7:17 remaining in the game. The Pointers came charging back, tying the score at 61-61 with just 3:21 remaining after a pair of Bandow free-throws and took the lead just a possession later on a Josi Schultz (Eau Claire) jumper in the lane.

After both teams traded baskets as time ran low, the Cobbers' Maggie Bauernfeind tied the game at 67 with a three-pointer with just 18 seconds remaining.

That's when Bandow and the Pointers answered with just eight ticks left, as Andrea Flease (New London) drove the lane and dished to Bandow for the game-winning basket.

With just four seconds left and a chance to win, Bauernfiend's three-point attempt was blocked by Flease, giving the Pointers their fifth straight Pointer Tip-Off Tournament Championship.

Bandow led the way for the Pointers, scoring 20 points on 7 of 14 shooting including 3 of 5 from three point land. Petersen added 17 points and collected a team-high nine rebounds. Flease tallied her first double-double of the season, pouring in 12 points and added 10 assists.

Concordia's Bauernfeind led all scorers with 24 points.

Bandow and Petersen were named to the all-tournament team while Flease took home the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 when they host Wisconsin Lutheran College in non-conference action at Berg Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
