Flease Leads Pointers Past Regents

STEVENS POINT - Andrea Flease (New London) tallied 19 points, 11 in the first half, and recorded six steals and two rebounds in just 24 minutes to lead the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team to a 75-49 victory over the Regents of Rockford College in the opening round of the 2009 Pointer Tip-Off Tournament.

The Pointers advance to play Concordia-Moorhead who won their opening round tournament game 90-51 over St. Scholastica.

After opening the game on an 8-0 run and building a 14 point lead, (21-7) midway through the first half, the Regents began to chip away at the Pointer lead and at the 3:59 mark of the opening half, tied the game at 25-25. The Pointers responded an 8-0 run to close out the half, pulling in front 33-25.

In the second half, the Pointers continued to add to their lead and began to pull away from the Regents, building a 14-point lead midway through the second half and then pulled away for the 26-point victory.

Flease led all scorers with her 19 points and added two assists to her evening while Josi Schultz (Eau Claire) finished with 10 points and six rebounds for the Pointers. Britta Petersen (Luck) added eight points and five rebounds in the victory.

Melissa Swaziek and Britney Curry each tallied 12 in the loss for the Regents.

The Pointer and Cobbers take to the floor at 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon in the championship game of the 2009 Pointer Tip-Off Tournament, presented by Ramada-Stevens Point. The consolation game begins at 1 p.m. in Berg Gym and features Rockford and St. Scholastica.
