LA CROSSE – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team shot 52.7 percent from the floor on Tuesday evening on the way to a 20 point victory over the V-Hawks of Viterbo 68-48. The victory give head coach
Shirley Egner her 500th victory of her coaching career.
Egner has compiled a 359-168 overall record in her 20 seasons, ranking second on the all-time WIAC wins list. The Pointers have won at least 18 games each of the past nine seasons and own a league-best .810 winning percentage during that time. Egner's all-time coaching record, including high school, is now 500-218.
Six lead changes and four ties kept the game close for the first 20 minutes as both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor. Viterbo built a seven point lead with four minutes to go in the opening half, but the Pointers answered with a 11-0 run to grab a four point lead heading into halftime, 35-31.
In the second half, the Pointer defense put the clamps on the hot-shooting V-Hawks, holding the hosts to just 4-28 shooting from the floor, 2-10 from beyond the three-point arc en route to the 20 point victory.
Britta Petersen (Luck) led all scorers with 14 points and added five rebounds and three assists on the evening in the victory.
Andrea Flease (New London) added 12 points while
Whitney Verdegan (Glen Flora) and
Ashley Averkamp (New Berlin) each added 10 points in the victory.
Cassie Bandow (Plover) and Averkamp each recorded six rebounds on the night to lead the team.
Katina Mandylaris led the way for the V-Hawks, recording 10 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort.
UW-Stevens Point returns to action Friday when they host Rockford College in the opening round of the 2009 Pointer Tip-Off Tournament presented by Ramada Stevens Point. Action begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20.
