STEVENS POINT - It wasn't a victory on the scoresheet when the match was over Tuesday afternoon for the UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team, but it was a moral victory, as the Pointers took two singles matches en route to a 7-2 defeat at the hands of the UW-Whitewater Warhawks.
The defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) champion Warhawks had blazed through their conference schedule, having not lost a single point in any match.
Along came the Pointers, a team much improved from years past, riding a two match win streak heading into Tuesday's showdown.
Down 3-0 after doubles, the Pointers'
Chelsea Allbaugh (Bettendorf, IA) avenged her loss in the conference final last season, defeating Whitewater's Ingrid Stensvaag 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
At No. 5 singles, after dropping her first set 6-1 and in down 4-1 in the second,
Kaylei Sorensen (Plover) battled back to win a thrilling 6-4 second match and force a superbreak, which she won 10-8, securing her 13th singles victory of the season.
The Pointers (9-5, 2-3 WIAC) next travel UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 16 to close out the fall season with a 4 p.m. match-up with the Titans. The Pointers will then head to Madison for the WIAC Tournament on Oct. 24-25.
