LA CROSSE - The tenth-ranked Pointer wrestling team suffered their first conference loss on Friday evening, falling 18-16 to the seventh-ranked Eagles of UW-La Crosse in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action at Mitchell Hall in La Crosse.
The Pointers tallied early wins from
Jered Kern (Mosinee/Mosinee) (Mosinee) and
Chase DeCleene (Ashwaubenon/Ashwaubenon) (Ashwaubenon) to jump ahead to a 10-3 lead.
Kris Magruder (Racine/Case) (Racine) then earned the Pointers another three points for a 13-3 advantage, capturing a 10-8 win at 149. ¬La Crosse tallied wins at 157 and 174 while
Jake Wozniak (Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) (Stanley) earned another Pointer victory at 165, pushing the score to 16-9 UWSP.
At 184,
Ben Engelland (Neenah/Neenah) (Neenah) and UW-L's Josh Zabel battled to a 5-3 decision in the Eagles favor, and La Crosse inched ever closer, cutting their deficit to four, 16-12. At 197, the Pointers'
Jeremy Fulk (Anchorage, AK/West Valley) (Anchorage, Alaska) fell in an 8-3 decision to UW-L's Andy Moore, as the Eagles moved within one, 16-15. Then at 285, UW-L's Dan Laurent earned a 7-3 decision over
Chad Gregory (Lawton, OK/Lawton) (Lanton, Okla.) to seal the come-from-behind win, 18-16.
The win is the sixth straight for the Eagles over the Pointers, who fall to 10-3 overall and suffer their first conference loss of the season. UW-La Crosse improves to 15-5 overall and pulls even with the Pointers in conference play with a 2-1 record.
The Pointers return to action on Jan. 20 when they host Division II opponent UW-Parkside at 7 p.m. in Berg Gym.
