KENOSHA, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team rounded out a successful week with a strong showing at the Wisconsin Open on Saturday as several individuals advanced to the field's final rounds and
Ben Engelland (Neenah/Neenah) (Neenah) captured the 184-pound championships. No team scores were kept at the 37th annual event host by UW-Parkside.
At 125,
Derek Saari (Escanaba, MI/Escanaba) (Escanaba, Mich.) finished in sixth, falling to Lindewood University's Daniel Morreale to end his day in the finals round. Jared Kern (Mosinee) finished in fifth at 133, defeating McKendree College's Kyle Williams with a pin at 2:23.
Elsewhere,
Jake Wozniak (Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) (Stanley) finished second at 165, losing a tight 8-6 decision to UW-Parkside's Corey Van Groll and
Chris Karl (Arpin/Auburndale) (Auburndale) finished fifth at 174. At 285,
Chad Gregory (Lawton, OK/Lawton) (Lawton, Okla.),
Steve Wozniak (Neillsville/Greenwood) (Nielsenville) and
Bret Oswald (Antigo/Antigo) (Antigo) finished third through fifth for the Pointers.
Engelland continued to roll, defeating Luke Haag of UW-Parkside 8-2 in the championship match of the 184 pound weight class to secure the title. On the day, Engelland was a perfect 5-0.
The Pointers return to action on Dec. 11 at the Berg Gymnasium when they host UW-Platteville in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action starting at 7 p.m.
