STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team opened the 2008-09 season on Saturday with a successful showing at the Pointer Open, with over 450 participants wrestling in the open hosted in Stevens Point.
The Pointers had three wrestlers finish ahead of or beat nationally ranked wrestlers at the Open in a field that featured five teams ranked in the NCAA Division III top-10 and 15 wrestlers ranked nationally in Division III.
Individually, Jared Kern (Mosinee) finished fourth at his weight class, ahead of Nick Northern, ranked No. 2 in the nation. Jake Wozniak (Stanley) finished second in the tournament, losing a close 4-2 match against the returning National Champion Burkle Tyler at 165 and defeated Josh Terrell, currently ranked No. 4 from Dubuque.
Ben Engelland (Neenah) took first in at 184, placing ahead of UW-La Crosse’s No. 4 ranked All-American Josh Zabel. En route to the 184 championship, Engelland also beat Lucas Haag of UW-Parkside, a Division II national qualifier for the title.
The Pointers get their season underway on Nov. 18 when they travel to Lakeland College in Sheboygan at 7 p.m.
