Calhoun Named Outstanding Wrestler at Lone Star Duals

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX- The 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point wrestling team went 1-2-1 on Saturday at the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas.
The Pointers dropped their opening dual to Division II’s third-ranked Central Oklahoma 28-16. Jake Calhoun (Sr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) scored a fall over the Division II No. 1-ranked 125-pounder Tyler Zuckerman. Craig Bollig (Sr.-Verona) also scored a fall for the Pointers. Jake Wozniak (Jr.-Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) was the only other wrestler to earn a victory in the dual.
The Pointers responded in the second dual by defeating New Mexico Highlands 31-15. Winning for the Pointers were Calhoun, Jared Kern (Jr.-Mosinee), Kyle Mueller (Sr.-Spring Green/River Valley), Chris Brown (Sr.-Mishicot), Ben Engelland (Fr.-Neenah) and Bollig. Bollig had the lone pin for the Pointers.
In the third dual of the afternoon the Pointers were handed another defeat, this time at the hands of Division II’s first-ranked Nebraska-Kearney 29-15. Calhoun, Wozniak, Engelland and Bollig where only three to earn victories for the Pointers.
In the final match of the night the Pointers tied Oklahoma City University 16-16. Calhoun, Wozniak, Engelland, Bollig and Mitch Szwet (Sr.-Coleman) all scored wins for the Pointers.
Jake Calhoun went 4-0 on the day and was named Outstanding Lower Weight Wrestler of the Tournament for the non-Division I division.
The Pointers are now 7-4-1 on the season. Their next match is scheduled for January 19 when they host Loras College (IA).
