Eagles Too Much for Pointers

STEVENS POINT- The second-ranked UW-La Crosse Eagles proved to be too much for the 11th-ranked Pointers, as they were handed their first WIAC loss of the season 25-12 at Berg gym.
The evening got started out at 174-pounds featuring first-ranked and defending national champion Josh Chelf and second-ranked Eric Bath (Sr.-Pulaski). Chelf controlled most of the match and was up 6-1 when Bath hit a fireman’s carry and put Chelf to his back to make it 6-6 late in the final period. Bath just missed a pin as time expired and with riding time Chelf escaped with a 7-6 decision.
At 184-pounds, Ben Engellend (Fr.-Neenah) was unable to withstand a late match rally by third-ranked Josh Zabel and ended up coming up short 9-7.
At 197, second-ranked Craig Bollig (Sr.-Verona) cruised to an easy 6-1 victory over seventh-ranked Andy Moore to improve to 22-1 on the season. At heavyweight the Pointers continued their winning ways when Mitch Szwet (Sr.-Coleman) upset ninth-ranked Dan Laurent 2-0 to make the dual score 6-6.
After a Pointers’ forfeit at 125-pounds and a loss at 133, Chase DeCleene (Jr.-Ashwaubenon) scored a fall pinning Dan Crone 53-seconds into the second period. The Pointers went on to drop the last three matches of the evening.
With the defeat the Pointers are now 8-5-1 overall and 2-1 in the WIAC. The Pointers take to the mat this Saturday when they wrestle at The Border Brawl in Whitewater.
