MADISON – Freshman Michelle Pascavis (Waukesha/South) was named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Player of the Year and earned first team all-conference honors along with two of her teammates it was announced today by conference spokesman Matt Stanek.
Pointers head coach Matt Interbartolo was also named WIAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. Earlier this month, Interbartolo led the Pointers to the WIAC Conference Tournament title for the first time since the 1997 season, which qualified the team for the national tournament for first time in school history. Stevens Point is ranked fourth in the most recent National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) poll.
Pascavis is the first player in program history to earn the player of the year award and the second freshman in conference archives to claim the prize, joining UW-Oshkosh’s Jennifer Young in 2003. She took medalist honors at two meets this season and finished in the top 10 in every event. Pascavis also earned a spot on the All-WIAC first team, along with sophomore’s Amy Stiloski (Brookfield/Central) and Jessica Urban (Hartland/Arrowhead). Urban took medalist honors at the UW-Whitewater Invite. Pascavis and Urban fell one stroke short of capturing the individual title at the conference tournament. Stiloski finished in fourth place at the conference meet.
Senior Sarah Mosher (Evansville) earned second team all-conference honors and was also named to the inaugural All-Sportsmanship team.
This past season the Pointers won four team titles in the six meets they competed in and placed second at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational finished third behind a pair of Division II schools at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.
The national tournament will be held May 13-16, 2008 at Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa.
