In four seasons under UWSP Hall of Fame head coach Mark Mazzoleni, Shawn Wheeler helped guide the Pointers to back-to-back National Championships in 1989 and 1990, being named the NCAA Tournament MVP in 1989, before captaining the team the following season. A two-time All-Conference selection, Wheeler is in the top-five in career goals (5th, 76), career game winning goals (5th, 10), and game winning goals in a single season (2nd, 6). He also holds the program record for fastest goal to open a period, a feat he accomplished in just six-seconds against Bemidji State in February of 1989. After his playing career, Wheeler continued to be involved in hockey by becoming the first African-American head coach in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), where he coached the Charlotte Checkers from 1998-2000.
