Hayes wrestled as a heavyweight for head coach Johnny Johnson from 2002 to 2006. A two-time All-American, Hayes finished third in the country in 2006, his best career mark. In 2005, Hayes placed fifth at Nationals. A three-time NWCA Scholar-All American, Hayes was the WIAC Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete in 2006. In 2006, Hayes also earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, the only UWSP wrestler in program history to do so. On the mat, he was the WIAC runner-up at heavyweight three-straight years from 2004 to 2006. Hayes was also a successful member of the UWSP football team.
