Final Standings

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point has finished the 2008-09 academic year ranked seventh in the Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, tallying 779 points.

This marks the 12th straight season UW-Stevens Point has finished in the top-25 of the prestigious Directors' Cup standings. UW-Stevens Point also finishes as the second-highest ranked public university in the final poll, behind only Cortland State in New York.

UW-Stevens Point held on to the top-10 finish after coming in as high as third during the 2008-09 season despite the limited number of spring sport offerings compared to the teams finishing in the top-six.

“Our finish speaks to the incredible ability of our coaches and our student-athletes,” said UW-Stevens Point Sports Information Director Mitch Capelle. “To finish in the top-25 each of the past 12 years and be in the top-10 seven of the 14 years the cup has existed demonstrates we continually strive for success at the conference, regional and national level.”

The seventh place finish is the highest for the University since the 2004-05 season when the Pointers finished in fifth place. The 779 points amassed by the Pointers this season is also the highest point total for UWSP in the history of the standings.

UW-Stevens Point was also the highest-finishing Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) school in the 2009 standings and the only WIAC school in the top-10.

UW-La Crosse finished in 11th place while UW-Eau Claire finished in 12th. UW-Whitewater finished in 15th and UW-Oshkosh finished 17th to round out the conference schools finishing in the top-25.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each school's NCAA Division III postseason finish in up to nine sports for men and nine for women. Each national champion received 100 points.
