STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point women’s soccer team wrapped up the 2009 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament championship with a 1-0 victory over the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds at the Pointer Soccer Bowl. The victory gave the Pointers the WIAC regular season and tournament sweep for the second consecutive season.
The first half showcased a defensive struggle, as both teams failed to record a goal. Pointer goalkeeper Liz Hunter tallied three saves in the first half and her counterpart Emily Kidd stopped four Pointer shots as well. The teams headed into halftime at a 0-0 deadlock.
The Pointers struck midway through the second half to gain the one goal advantage at the 65:55 mark. Jackie Spees, who was honored as UW-Stevens Point’s only senior in the pregame festivities, powered her shot attempt passed the drawn out Kidd for her 10th goal of the season, pushing the score to 1-0.
The Pointer defense remained stellar for the remainder of the game as they allowed only one shot-on-goal from the Blugolds offense.
The Pointers were led on offense by Kirsti Nickels’ three shots-on-goal and Hunter’s four saves on defense.
The Pointers will be in action next week when they will play against an unknown opponent in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Time and place will be decided later this week. Be sure to check the athletic website for updates.
