STEVENS POINT-After last season, Pointer senior Craig Bollig (Sr.-Verona) knew it was time to move up a weight class. Apparently that jump helped as Bollig went 4-0 on his way to his first Pointer Open championship, capturing the 197-pound gold division crown.
Bollig, who is ranked fourth in the country at 197, pinned his opponent in the opening round before winning by injury default and a 2-1 decision in the semifinals. He then capped off his title by defeating UW-La Crosse senior, Tim Winker, 3-1.
Steve Wozniak (Fr.-Neillsville) was runner-up in the heavyweight silver division winning three straight matches by pin before losing to Hakin Binek of UW-La Crosse 8-6 in the title match. Brandon Jochem (Fr.-Hustisford) took fourth in the 197-pound silver division.
While battling the flu much of the day, third-ranked 174-pounder, Eric Bath (Sr.-Pulaski), moved up a weight class and had two pins en route to a fourth place finish in the 184-pound gold division.
Also placing for the Pointers was freshman Chris Magruder (Fr.-Racine/Case), who took sixth in the 141-pound silver division, and junior Jered Kern (Jr.-Mosinee) who took fourth in the 133-pound gold division.
No team scores were kept in the meet, which featured wrestlers from 19 different schools, ranging from Division I through junior colleges.
